When traveling as a rabbit, one is doing so without paying the fare—as a stowaway, sneaking onboard a train, bus, or ship, and likely staying as quiet and nondescript as a rabbit in the hope that nobody notices. It’s a thrilling but risky business—even for those with twitchy noses and cottontails—and so not really recommended. Perhaps the idiom references a rabbit because it wouldn’t be tall enough (even standing on its back legs) to reach the ticket barriers, so can hop straight on through and cross whichever cities or oceans it pleases. As early as 1946, people were hiding inside the wheel wells of airplanes and journeying far and wide (although the success rate is below 24 percent). But it’s not just humans who make use of this classic stowaway technique—animals can be excellent accidental explorers, and in 2013 a cat survived a flight from Athens to Zürich in the front undercarriage of a plane.
